MANGROVE RESEARCH CENTER
The main concept is to design a 600 sq. m research center located in an environmentally sensitive Mangrove Area of the Arabian Gulf, using “passive” design as much as possible.
Physics was the main driver of the design of 3 pavilions. The main pavilion or the ‘spine” serves as a multi-purpose hall/reception/event-hall, the second pavilion is utilized by researchers, and the third on is to be used by patrons. The entire building is designed to be ‘opened” up in moderate weather conditions, acting like a ‘tent” were the breeze may cool people down, rather than mechanical systems.
The program strictly prohibits the disturbance of the ecosystem and the mangroves themselves.
